The e-culture fair was a positive experience for many organisations that presented at and visited the fair. Via the bus trips – starting from the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany – a very specialised and interested public arrived in Dortmund, which made a interesting professional exchange possible.

Social Spaces’ educational project at the E-Culture Fair 2010

On 23rd – 25th of August, the research group Social Spaces will be present at the E-Culture Fair 2010 in Dortmund (Germany). The fair is organized by BAM, the Flemish institute for visual, audiovisual and media art, “Virtueel Platform” and “Medienwerk NRW” and is part of RUHR 2010, the European Capital of Culture and ISEA 2010 (16th International Symposium on Electronic Arts). The E-Culture Fair revolves around (cross-disciplinary) projects on (media) technology, art, research and creative industry. Here, companies, schools, universities, research groups and artists from Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany will present their work. At a booth at the Fair, Social Spaces will present itself and several of the projects the group currently is involved in (closely collaborating with Art Centre Z33, the Province of Limburg and the Expertise centre for Digital Media). On a second booth, Social Spaces will present a project which currently is taking place. This project – supported by Province of Limburg, Art Centre Z33 and BAM, the Flemish Institute for visual, audiovisual and media art – aims for representing e-culture projects from various art schools, universities and institutes.

OPROEP VOOR DEELNAME – EMF ORKEST WORKSHOP

Baltan Laboratories is op zoek naar maximum 15 deelnemers die op 30 juni (10:00 u – 17:00 u) om deel te nemen in de EMF Orkest Workshop, met begeleiders Peter Westenberg en Wendy Van Wynsberghe van Constant vzw, Brussel. “In het eerste deel bouwen de deelnemers hun eigen EMF antennes, die Elektro Magnetische straling hoorbaar maakt. Vervolgens voeren zij met hun antennes een collectieve stedelijke interventie uit in het centrum van Eindhoven”.

We beginnen met een presentatie / introductie over EMF die de wandeling en de workshop contextualiseert. Daarna bouwt iedere deelnemer zijn / haar eigen antenne. Materiaal en gereedschap worden voorzien.

EMF Orkest: Collectieve performance in Eindhoven
Ervaar de stad als een elektro-magnetisch audiolandschap. Wagens, bekabeling, straatverlichting, beveiligingsinstalaties en vele andere elektrische apparaten zorgen ervoor dat urbane omgevingen gesatureerd zijn door elektro-magnetische stralen. Al wandelend scannen we de stad en maken die stralingen hoorbaar. We improviseren dissonante hamonieën door verschillende antennes te combineren.

18:00 – 20:00
‘s Avonds worden de deelnemers en de workshop begeleiders uitgenodigd om hun ervaringen van tijdens de workshop te delen met het publiek, tijdens een BALTAN Session in het lab.

Nieuw postgraduaat: Sociaal en participatief gebruik van nieuwe media voor de sociale, culturele en onderwijssector.

De opleiding Communicatie- en Multimediadesign (Media & Design Academie, Katholieke Hogeschool Limburg) start in september een postgraduaat voor sociaal en participatief gebruik van nieuwe media in de sociale, culturele en onderwijssector. Het postgraduaat ‘Multimedia & Communicatie’ wil via deze vorming een stimulans zijn voor projecten in het werkveld. Tijdens de opleiding werk je onder begeleiding van nieuwe media experts, kunstenaars en ontwerpers een eigen project uit.
De opleiding is laagdrempelig en toegankelijk voor mensen die bezig zijn met communicatie, publieks werking, gemeenschapsvorming, en dergelijke. Download de folder voor meer info.
Op 10 juni wordt het postgraduaat voorgesteld tijdens de laatste puntKom van het academiejaar. Er is ruimte om vragen te stellen aan de coördinator van het postgraduaat en ook om al kennis te maken met wat het postgraduaat te bieden heeft. Het thema van de avondsessie is verhaalprojecten. Register van de Dag van Gister en de methode van Narrative Inquiry komen aan bod. Meer info over de kick- off vind je hier.

Frederik De Wilde receives Ars Electronica [the next idea] Voestalpine Art and Technology Grant.

Belgian media artist Frederik De Wilde just got the message that he received this year’s Ars Electronica [the next idea] Voestalpine Art and Technology Grant for the work “Hostage”. This “painting” claims to be produced in the blackest material ever, which would be possible because it is built on nano scale. It is created together with the Rice University in Texas.

Musea in een digitale cultuur

Op vrijdag 21 mei een colloquium en een masterclass plaats, met een de lange titel: ‘Musea in een digitale cultuur. Naar een duurzaam beheer van digitaal erfgoed in musea’.
De masterclass stelt volgende vragen centraal:
- Wat betekent de toenemende digitalisering voor de manier waarop we denken over en omgaan met het cultureel erfgoed van gisteren, vandaag en morgen?
- Wat is de impact van de digitalisering op de structuur van een cultureel-erfgoedinstelling?
- Waar zal een museum op het vlak van organisatie en financiering rekening mee moeten houden om op langere termijn digitaal erfgoed duurzaam te kunnen beheren?
- Op welke wijze kan gedigitaliseerd cultureel erfgoed toegankelijk worden gemaakt voor verschillende doeleinden en doelgroepen?
- Hoe kan het voor hergebruik beschikbaar worden gesteld?

De Geuzen, View by Thread

This week I visited the wonderful exhibition by The Geuzen. The Geuzen is a Dutch-Belgian collective that is active for years (since the mid-nineties) in the field of digital arts and design. Some tags, bits and pieces on their website and some physical artefacts they created over the years are woven into a exhibition for STUK, View by Thread, which can endlessly be re-woven. It presents critical concepts about media culture, body, identity and feminism that are materialised in a way that everybody can relate to in a very personal way. You can cut out your Geuzennaam from a dirty table cloth, for example. “Geuzennaam: a Dutch term for a negative or derogatory name appropriated and reclaimed as a positive label of empowerment”. By carefully choosing your name, cutting it out, you make it your own (I cut out the name “uptight” and “user”, especially because of the beautiful combination of the two words )
You should definitely go over there and playfully create your own opinion about this project.

Creativity World Forum. New Processes, New Approaches, New Art. Oproep naar Vlaamse kunstenaars

Van 15 tot 17 november organiseert Oklahoma (VS) het 2010 Creativity World Forum. Het forum brengt ondernemers, kenniswerkers en beleidsmensen van over de hele wereld samen. Zij laten zich inspireren door topsprekers en wisselen ideeën en ervaringen uit. Netwerken staat daarbij centraal. Voor meer info surf naar: www.stateofcreativity.com/2010cwf

In het kader van het 2010 Creativity World Forum en naar het voorbeeld van Venetië organiseert Oklahoma de eerste Creativity World Biennale in Oklahoma City van 15 november 2010 tot 8 januari 2011. De Creativity World Biennale zal kunstenaars uit de 12 District of Creativity (Baden-Württemberg, Catalonië, Karnataka, Lombardije, Nord-Pas de Calais, Oklahoma, Qingdao, Rhône-Alpes, Schotland, Shanghai, Tampere en Vlaanderen) bijeenbrengen.

Als centraal thema werd er gekozen voor New Processes, New Approaches, New Art. Het thema is gebaseerd op het idee dat technologische ontwikkeling over heel de wereld, ook geleid hebben tot nieuwe processen, nieuwe materialen en nieuwe media in de kunstwereld. Kunstenaars waar ook ter wereld zijn actief op zoek naar nieuwe methodes om kunst tot stand te laten komen.

Praktisch
* Deze call is gericht naar visuele kunstenaars uit Vlaanderen die hun projecten willen presenteren op de Creativity World Biennale.
* De projecten moeten passen binnen het thema van New Processes, New Approaches, New Art.
* Uiteindelijk zullen vier Vlaamse artiesten door een onafhankelijk selectiecomité geselecteerd worden en voorgedragen aan de organisatie in Oklahoma.
* Uit deze vier genomineerde artiesten zal Oklahoma twee visuele kunstenaars kiezen, die hun werk uiteindelijk zullen kunnen tentoonstellen van 15 november 2010 tot 8 januari 2011 (Opening op 15 november 2010, samen met de opening van het 2010 Creativity World Forum).
* Deze call is speciaal gericht op Vlaanderen. Vergelijkbare calls gaan uit in de 11 anders Districts of Creativity.
* In totaal worden meer dan 6000 bezoekers verwacht en krijgt elke kunstenaar maximum 550m² ter beschikking.

* Bovendien zullen de vijf meest interessante kunstenaars (van alle deelnemende regio’s) geselecteerd worden om deel te nemen als spreker of panellid op het Creativity World Forum. Deze vijf kunstenaars zullen vergoed worden voor transport en verblijf.
* Verzekeringskosten van alle werken tijdens transport naar de VS, tijdens op- en afbouw en tijdens de Biennale worden betaald door de organisator.
* Een catalogus met alle werken zal gepubliceerd worden.
* De Biennale zal door de organisator nationaal (VS) en in geselecteerde internationale kunstmagazines gepromoot worden.

Unfold prints ceramics

Last weekend the Design by performance exhibition opened at Z33. It was a remarkable exhibition with a lot of a – obviously – performative work. Very interesting was the work of Unfold, a collective of the designers Claire Warnier and Dries Verbruggen. A virtual pottery making disk (designed by Tim Knapen) enables visitors to mould their own clay. It resembles the classic pottery making disks, but makes use of a laser technique and a computer screen – If visitors feel they made a succesful design they can “save” by pushing a button and otherwise they “reset”. An open source 3D printer – based on the RepRap technique – prints the saved models in a clay form. On the one hand the produced clay forms are tiny, which makes it difficult to imagine that people have been able to manipulate them. On the other hand the “feel” of moulding is stressed by the conscious use of the old technique of ceramics. This contrasts with plastic, which is often associated with rapid production and standardisation. With this reflective design work – part of an ongoing research project - Unfold places the visitor in the role of a producer.
