Video report ‘By Data We Mean’

A few weeks ago Constant vzw organized another interesting edition of their media art festival Verbindingen/Jonctions. The theme this year was ‘By Data We Mean’. There, a highly focussed discussion took place about the definitions, forms, meanings, .. of data.
Three main themes were proposed to the public. Shades of Grey Literature is “an invitation to discover, play and worry about the numerous documents, commentaries and traces which organise electronic communication in the background”. The life and nature of data explored following questions: “What is data? To who or what is it handed over or where does it come from? (…) In the form of games, statistical manipulation and discussion, V/J12 tries to decode and put its finger on the issues that weigh on the registrations that are stored in logs and databases”. Performative Instructions “looks at codes and norms that put themselves or others in motion”.

A lot of very interesting talks were given by Dominique Roodthooft, Jürgen Pieters, Pierre De Jaeger, Annemieke Van der Hoek, An Mertens, Kirsty Stansfield, Simon Yuill, Christophe Lazaro, Laïa Sadurni, Virginie Jortay, Matthew Fuller, Andrew Goffey, Micheal Murtaugh, Ludivine Loiseau, Seda Gürses, Anne Laure Buisson, Denis Devos, Michel Cleempoel, Alexandre Dulaunoy, Thomas Olbrechts, Ivan Monroy Lopez, Marloes Van der Hoek, Dorothé Depeauw, Lot Jansen, Matthias Koole, Rebecca Leanerts, Claudia Borges, Adam Hyde, Kirrily Robert, Michael Moss.

For those who were not able to attend the whole festival – like me – can find video recordings of the talks via this link: http://video.constantvzw.org/vj12/

Enjoy!
